Course Breakdown

Shinjuku to Iidabashi

Miles 16|Gently downhill

The slight downhill grade at the start feels fast. Resist the urge to bank time early.

Starting at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku, the course heads east and slightly downhill through Iidabashi. It's a massive field and the first few kilometers are congested. The crowd support starts strong and stays consistent throughout.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

Imperial Palace & Ginza

Miles 713|Flat

Past the Imperial Palace and through Ginza. Flat and fast with incredible crowd support.

The course passes the Imperial Palace moat and runs through the upscale Ginza shopping district. This is prime-time Tokyo marathon running: wide roads, dense crowds, and a festival atmosphere. These should be your most comfortable miles.

Ginza (Mile 10)

Shinagawa & Asakusa

Miles 1422|Flat with turnarounds

Two out-and-back sections. The turnarounds are mentally tough. Focus on your own pace, not runners coming the other way.

Out-and-back stretches to Shinagawa in the south and then north past Asakusa and the Senso-ji temple. The turnarounds can be mentally draining but the temple scenery lifts the spirits. Stay steady through the second-half grind.

Senso-ji Temple (Mile 18)

Toyosu Finish

Miles 2327|Flat

Heading southeast toward the waterfront. The final stretch is exposed and can feel long. Commit to your pace.

The course heads toward the Tokyo Bay waterfront, finishing near Tokyo Big Sight. The final miles are along wider roads with good crowd support. The finish area is modern and well-organized. Push through the last 5K and soak in the finish.

Tokyo Marathon Pace Calculator & Race Plan

Tokyo is flat, well-organized, and usually runs in cool February weather. It's one of the easier World Majors to pace well because there are no hills to surprise you and the conditions are typically favorable. The course loops through central Tokyo with excellent crowd support throughout.

The main pacing challenge is the sheer size of the field and the congested first few miles. Our model accounts for the slow start and gives you splits that reflect what race day actually looks like rather than a theoretical even-pace plan.
